FAQ’s About LGBTQ2+ Family Formation

In the following, we will try to answer the questions we are most frequently asked, so that you can feel completely safe and secure on your journey towards parenthood. If you don't find the answers to all your questions on this page, you can always contact us here for further information or guidance. We look forward to assisting you along the way.

  • What is the process like for a lesbian couple?

We assist many lesbian couples who want to become parents, and there are several different ways to get started. You can obtain a referral from your doctor to a public fertility clinic or contact a private fertility clinic directly. When you have chosen a sperm donor that feels right for you, you can handle the purchase of sperm directly from us or any other sperm bank. The fertility clinic will handle the insemination process, and there may be a need for hormone treatment, but their staff will guide you through that.

  • Do I have parental rights, and what about the donor?

When a sperm donor chooses to donate sperm, he fully understands and agrees to relinquish any parental rights. This applies to both ID release and no ID release donors, which you can read more about here. The donor is never registered as a parent or granted parental authority. Instead, the birthing parent receives parental rights and custody at birth.

As a co-parent who is a woman or assigned female at birth, you can be registered as a parent from birth if you obtain pre-approval for co-maternity before the birth. There is also the option of later step-parent adoption or the birthing parent sharing parental authority with you.

  • Is home insemination an option?

For some couples, home insemination may feel like the right choice, but we do not provide sperm for home insemination. Legislation requires traceability of sperm donations, ensuring that it is always known if a donation has resulted in a child. Therefore, we need to send your orders directly to a fertility clinic. The advantage might be that there is also a slightly higher likelihood of pregnancy if you are inseminated at a clinic, and caring professionals ensure that you receive the best possible treatment and experience.

  • Can I become a parent as a transgender person?

The short answer is yes, and we want to ensure that transgender individuals receive the appropriate guidance on their journey to parenthood. There are several options available to you, so start by having important conversations about how you envision the process. It is possible to contact your own doctor and obtain a referral to a fertility clinic where you can receive personalised advice and assistance for the next steps.

  • Can my child have genetic siblings?

If you have a donor-conceived child, it is worth considering whether the child should have genetic siblings in the future using the same sperm donor. If this is something you want, we recommend ordering additional sperm units for future use, as some of our popular sperm donors sell out quickly. These units can be stored in a storage facility with us until you need them. You can find more information on how to order sperm at the following link here.
