How We Screen Our Sperm Donors

At Born, we carefully select, test, and screen our donors for various diseases in accordance with applicable quality and safety standards as stipulated in the EU directives regarding human tissue and cells, and as implemented in the Danish Tissue Act.

Our screening is determined in accordance with the rules and recommendations set by the Danish Health Authority and the Danish Patient Safety Authority, which are in turn based on The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s (ECDC) requirements for non-partner semen donations.

The purpose of these screenings is to exclude and avoid donor applicants with infectious diseases and serious genetic diseases.

Furthermore, the donor applicants must go through a comprehensive screening process that is determined in accordance with Born’s internal standards and the regulations of the countries we ship to. The selection criteria of our donors include donor age, health, assessment of risk behaviour, donor interviews, questionnaire responses, review of the medical history of the donor and donor’s family, a physical examination, and an assessment by our specialist doctor in clinical genetic. The screening process includes analysis of sperm, blood, and urine for the testing of sperm quality and a wide range of infectious and genetic diseases.

Initial Tests

Firstly, the application process includes an initial test. Our donors will undergo tests for:

  • Blood type
  • Rhesus Status
  • Chromosome analysis

Secondly, the application of our donors includes tests at release:

  • CMV
  • HIV I + II
  • HEP B + C

For clinics

At Born, we take pride in keeping up to date on legislation developments within the countries we ship to. Closely connected to this is the focus on making sure to keep our donors counselled and informed of what they sign up for, including the health optimisation, rules, and legislations for the countries we ship to. Our processes are maintained by the latest updates and changes about regulations in the countries in question.
