ICI - Intracervical Insemination

ICI stands for IntraCervical Insemination, where donor sperm is placed high in the vagina, close to the cervix. This method is ideal for women with a healthy cycle who might prefer to be treated by their private gynecologist rather than at a clinic.

Intracervical Insemination

Intracervical Insemination (ICI) is a form of artificial insemination that introduces donor sperm into the vagina, near the cervix. Specially processed ICI units, containing natural ejaculation fluid and cells, are used for this treatment. Once inserted, the most motile sperm cells naturally travel through the cervix and cervical fluid, making their way into the uterus and fallopian tubes.

ICI is particularly suitable for women with a healthy cycle who prefers a more personalised approach to fertility treatment, often conducted by their private gynecologist.

How ICI Fertility Treatment Works

During an ICI treatment, the semen is processed into ICI units, maintaining the natural fluid and cells present in ejaculation. It is a non-invasive procedure that does not require any surgical intervention. It is gentle and comfortable, with minimal discomfort during the insemination process.

This type of insemination is relatively simple and painless. A chosen specialist gently inserts the ICI unit into the vagina, allowing the sperm to navigate through the cervix and reach the reproductive tract. This process closely replicates natural intercourse, promoting a more relaxed and comfortable experience for the patient.

Can I Use ICI Units for an Intrauterine Insemination?

IUI and ICI are processed in different ways and for health and safety reasons, only sperm cells alone may be placed directly inside the uterus. This means that ICI units need to be purified by a professional before being used for intrauterine insemination (IUI).

The main difference between ICI and IUI lies in the insemination process. While ICI sperm is placed in the vagina, near the cervix, IUI involves inserting purified sperm directly into the uterus.

We recommend that you let your fertility specialist guide you before placing your order for either of these units. Please note that Danish legislation requires that an approved tissue center, fertility clinic, hospital clinic or gynecologist is the recipient of your ICI unit order.

Is ICI the right type of fertility treatment for you?

Before opting for ICI, it is essential to consult with your fertility specialist. They will evaluate your individual circumstances, provide guidance, and determine if ICI is the right choice for your fertility journey.

The success of ICI largely depends on sperm motility and quality.

While ICI can be effective, like natural conception, multiple treatment cycles may be necessary to achieve pregnancy. Patience and persistence are essential during the process.
