Sperm Storage & Sperm Freezing

Sperm Freezing - How Sperm Storage Works

We store sperm safely and effectively via cryopreservation (freezing process), where the sperm is kept frozen in liquid nitrogen tanks at a temperature of -196 degrees celsius. Cryopreservation does not impact the genetic material and keeps the specimens viable for an indefinite period - meaning that using frozen sperm is possible for your fertility treatment at your fertility clinic. In fact, pregnancies have been achieved using sperm that has been stored for up to 40 years.

Why Store Sperm?

There are several reasons to store sperm – to ensure your preferred donor’s sperm remains available, to preserve your own fertility or if you may wish to start a family at a later time in your life. Whatever your needs, we have a variety of storage options to help you keep sperm safe for future use:

Donor Sperm Storage

  • For when you’ve purchased donor sperm from our bank and wish to store it for future use.

Personal Sperm Storage

  • To preserve your own sperm for later use, for example where medical reasons or other factors risk impacting your sperm in the future.

Known Donor Sperm Storage

  • For storing the sperm of a donor who is known to you, and who has agreed to donate to you.

Donor Sperm Storage

For ethical and legal reasons, there’s a limit on how many times a specific donor’s sperm can be sold in a specific country, or even worldwide. Once you’ve found your perfect donor match in our catalogue, you might want to consider storing their sperm and buying exclusive rights for future use and potential future siblings. Storing your chosen donor sperm is a good idea if you:

  • Want to guarantee that your preferred donor is available for multiple fertility cycles and treatments until you become pregnant
  • Wish to avoid changing donor mid-treatment
  • Wish to have genetic siblings in the future
  • Want the sperm units delivered over 30 days after placing your order

Personal Sperm Storage

Many men or couples opt to freeze their sperm if they are concerned that lifestyle factors or medical issues may impact their fertility. If you wish to preserve your sperm for future use, storage might be a good idea if you:

  • are about to undergo treatment that could affect fertility, for example, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, hormone replacement therapy or other medical or surgical procedures that impact sperm health.
  • are in an occupation that poses a high risk to your sperm health or exposes you to potential testicular injury – such as military personnel, police officers, firefighters, high-impact athletes, or those who work with x-rays and radiation.
  • are transgender and plan to undergo procedures that may impact your reproductive options.
  • have difficulty producing a sperm sample on the day of fertility treatment
  • have a low sperm count or deteriorating sperm quality, for example, due to age.

None of the above apply? Don’t hesitate to reach out with the specifics of your situation so we can guide you to a solution.

Personal sperm storage is priced at 990 euros and includes:

  • 1 year of storage
  • 2 donations - resulting in 2 or more units, depending on the volume and quality of the sperm.
  • Sperm analysis, purification and cryopreservation.

Known Donor Sperm Storage

Instead of purchasing sperm from a sperm bank, you might have a specific donor in mind. A known donor is a term for somebody who is not your partner or spouse - such as a friend  – who has privately agreed to make a sperm donation to you to help you start a family.

With our sperm storage,  you can freeze and store your known donor’s sperm until you are ready to begin fertility treatment.

Similarly to the donors who work with us, Danish law requires that your known donor undergo extensive medical testing and screening - for more information about the specifics, please see our screening page

Things to Think About

There are some key ways that using known donor sperm may differ from the donor sperm in our catalogue.

Where our donors’ sperm quality is carefully screened according to the highest standards, it may be possible for your known donor to show a lower sperm count and still qualify for storage. Please note that this may result in lower pregnancy rates when compared with the donors in our catalogue.

Using a known donor – with whom you have an existing social relationship – may also require more legal, medical and ethical considerations than relying on a sperm donor from our bank. It may also give rise to complicated questions or dilemmas about the donor’s relationship to your child. Before embarking on your fertility journey with the help of a known donor, we recommend that both parties seek appropriate medical, legal and psychological advice.

FAQ

We have gathered some of the most frequent asked questions we receive about sperm storage here:

  • What happens to my sperm when it is frozen?

The answer is that a small fraction of the sperm will not survive. However, freezing your sperm is a safe form of fertility preservation that makes it possible to make use of your sperm in the future if you wish to have a child.

  • Do I need to deliver a sperm sample to see if it can be frozen?

Yes, you will need to produce a semen sample. We will then check that a sufficient proportion of the sperm cells survives the freezing process.

  • How long can I store my sperm?

You can store your sperm until you wish to use it. The freezing time has no impact on the quality of the semen when it thaws.

  • Can you store sperm at home?

No, it is not possible to store sperm at home. You need to freeze sperm at -196 degrees Celsius in special storage tanks, otherwise, it will affect the quality of the sperm.
